Superskin

An innovative “superskin” is assisting in reducing dust at Australian mine sites.

Dust suppression expert Reynolds Soil Technologies (RST Solutions) has launched an environmentally friendly solution to reduce dust onsite.

The RT4 Superskin is being used by rail wagons transporting coal from a coal mine in Queensland.

Designed for transporting mining materials, the RT4 Superskin is diluted in water and sprayed onto the surface for uncovered, bulk coal wagons to reduce dust emissions.

The key element to this solution is its “advanced” polymer surfactant technology.

RST Solutions’ water-based dust suppressant crusts and binds the coal’s surface layer, creating a durable veneer coating that prevents dust and fine particles escaping during pit –to-port transportation.

The Queensland company worked closely with civil engineering firm Shadforths Civil Contractors to develop the RT4 Superskin.

By applying one automated spray during the loading process, coal fine particles can be tightly suppressed as the water dispersive polymers dry.

RST Solutions operations and technical director David Handel said this process ensured dust was physically contained as the rail wagons travelled from pit to port.

“Compromising the latest in eco-friendly chemical technology, RT4 Superskin is both easy and efficient in application and is also a cost-effective alternative to covering the coal wagons with materials and lids,” Handel said.  “The strength and durability of the RT4 Superskin solution will also prevent the veneer coating from cracking throughout travel.”

RST Solutions has more than 25 years’ of experience specialising in total dust management, soil stabilisation and erosion, water for mine sites and ports in Australian and overseas.

The company’s head office is based in Burleigh Heads with an additional office in Carlisle, Western Australia.
